Centering Circles, 2023

Restoring Balance in Tempting Times

Why do we feel out of control or unbalanced in our lives? In my Kol Nidre sermon, I explored how we often are drawn to pleasures that leave us feeling worse, unbalanced, and unfulfilled. I spoke about a tool called an “Excitement Fast,” where we abstain from overly pleasurable activities in order for us to restore a sense of balance in our lives. However, this is difficult to do alone without the support of people who are going through the similar challenges.

We are forming an online group in October called “Centering Circle,” to gather and gain insights from Jewish tradition and support one another. We will relinquish short-term enticements that detract from our well-being and support each other through the process.

How do I know if I should engage in an excitement fast? If your behaviors are leading to guilt or shame, or if you can’t stop thinking about your excitement of choice, then you might want to engage in this fast.

YOUR EXCITEMENT OF CHOICE MAY BE:  Alcohol ● Drugs ● Exercise ● Gambling ● Romance Novels ● Sex/Pornography ● Shopping ● Social Media

Our Centering Circle will meet online Mondays and Wednesday, October 2 – November 1, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. and will be facilitated by Dr. Ken Elman.

Registration is not required, however if you would like to receive a reminder about the meeting, please email centeringcircle@atadelohim.com.

TAE Chorale Open Rehearsal

Thursday, June 8, 2023
7:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Social Hall

The TAE Chorale is opening its arms this spring to NEW singers! If you are a TAE partner in good standing, and have been singing along with us from the pews, please join us for an open rehearsal and sing some of our most beloved and familiar Shabbat favorites. While reading music is helpful, it is not required as long as you can hold your harmony. This is the perfect time of year to join our music family!

For more information, contact Cantor David at dshukiar@adatelohim.com.

Kabalah, Mysticism, and the Mysteries of the World

If traditional belief in God doesn’t excite you, then prepare yourself for some Jewish ideas that are so insightful, so radical, and so modern, that many rabbis tried to suppress them. But they couldn’t. Join Rabbi Diamond on May 7 and learn how ancient insights can transform our lives, whether or not we believe.

Rabbi Diamond’s Sunday morning events have always been entertaining and insightful.  This one promises to be the same.  We hope to see you there!

THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO OUR ENTIRE COMMUNITY.

For those of you who plan to attend, PLEASE  RSVP TO EITHER BROTHERHOOD PRESIDENT BOB SALFI, rsalfi@alumni.stevens-tech.edu OR HERB SHUKIAR, herb@rand.org to know how much food to provide.  Our normal bagel brunch fare includes lox, bagels, cream cheese, herring, onions, tomatoes, fruits and other tempting treats.

There is no charge for this event, but we do suggest a $5 donation to help defray the event’s cost.

Tzedakah is always the right thing to do. We know that for sure. Yet sometimes, we need to give to ourselves. That’s what we will be doing for this program: taking the time just for you, and making something, just for you.

Who’s ready to get crafty with me? Let’s have a relaxing evening, which inevitably will include some chatting and possibly a bit of noshing, while we create. These decorative small boxes, filled with personal prompts to you, affirmations, or just plain pretty cards, will serve as a gift to yourself when you might want a moment of inspiration.

Maybe you want to create action cards – “Go to a movie alone and order the large popcorn,” or “Meditate for one hour then journal what I learned,” or “Do one thing on my to-do list.” Maybe you want to create inspiration cards, “Let go,” or “Be brave.” Whatever comes to you during class time will be just right.

No experience needed. Only a willingness to come for fun, and leave inspired.
